The pancreas is an organ that loops around the GI tract and reaches from the naval to underneath the solar plexus. It provides insulin to the body to regulate blood sugar and digestive enzymes. The pancreas can become inflamed by over use of alcohol, stones in the gall bladder, an autoimmune attack, or a congenital defect. When it becomes inflamed it can become blocked develop pseudocysts or become infected. There is extreme pain associated due to inflammation.
The use of medical marijuana does three things for the person with pancreatitis; it will work as an anti-inflammatory, it will help with the appetite and reduce the pain. Medical marijuana has been proven in studies to increase the appetite, which is one of the reported symptoms of people suffering from pancreatitis. It can also reduce the inflammation, due to the compound properties in marijuana that have been proven to act as an anti-inflammatory and due to the THC it is proven to reduce pain.
